Become part of the adopt a critter program to help us generate funds for the various animals at the Earth Discovery Center!
“Adopt A Critter” helps Eagle Creek protect wildlife and educate others on the benefits of wildlife protection!
All adoptions are symbolic and in no way signify ownership.
Animals may not be held or touched. All animals may be adopted by more than one person.
Donations to Adopt A Critter are considered “restricted funds” and go specifically to support the Earth Discovery Center.
These funds are restricted to supporting the Earth Discovery Center at Eagle Creek Park.
The Earth Discovery Center is home to all manner of ground dwelling critters from turtles, frogs, snakes, possum and many other species who live under the care of the EDC staff.
All of the animals have been injured or otherwise cannot live in the wild and are now ambassadors to help educate people about the natural world around us.
They rely on donations from people like you for their feed and care. Your help is needed and appreciated!
Some critters are on permanent display in the Earth Discovery Exhibit Hall, like the ones you can see in this gallery, while others spend their time away from the public. These other critters, like the bats, act as ambassadors for their species during specific times and programs.
Eagle Creek Park frequently works with volunteer groups and individuals in a variety of ways to help beautify the park, educate patrons on the environment, and fundraise to enhance park amenities.
Their service plays an essential role in Eagle Creek Park’s overall success to the public. As patrons visit the park, we want to provide them with unsurpassed customer service and an opportunity to create a memorable experience.
Park naturalists can especially use volunteers who are willing to be trained in helping with structured hikes for school groups and the public, assist with programs or as docents in the center’s exhibit rooms, and help to cover our front desks/phones.
We’d like to thank our 100+ regular volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication to our park. They selflessly volunteer around 8,000 hours per year.
For more information on volunteer opportunities and how to apply to become a volunteer, please contact our volunteer coordinator Anne Cecere.

Indianapolis is located in the Mississippi Flyway, a lane for migrating birds of all kinds. American White Pelicans are one such example. They migrate between the Gulf Coast and Northern Canada by way of our wonderful Park.
Pelicans are striking birds—graceful in flight and impressively large. At Eagle Creek Park, they often arrive in flocks ranging from just a few to over 100, especially in spring and fall.
They can weigh up to 20 lbs (9 kg) with wingspans nearing 9 feet (2.9 m)—about the weight of 16 WNBA basketballs and the height of a basketball hoop!
During breeding season, some pelicans develop a bump or “plate” on their upper bill, which they shed afterward. Those without a plate are often juveniles, not yet old enough to mate.
Because the Waterfowl (bird) Sanctuary is so popular with year-round and migratory birds, it’s also very popular with birders. You will often see folks donning binoculars, cameras, and guidebooks, seeking to cross birds off their list.
This massive, protected sanctuary is what makes Eagle Creek Park a hotspot for birding across the Midwest and around the world.
The Ornithology Center has an incredibly knowledgeable staff that can give you tips and tricks for getting started. Also you’ll find birders hanging out at the center, so you may be able to get some advice from the robust birding community.
On the south side of the building, the Ornithology Center > keeps a running tally of which birds have been spotted each month, and it can be viewed even when the center is closed.

About the 56th Street Causeway at Eagle Creek Park.
The 56th Street Causeway is a vital roadway and recreational hub that crosses Eagle Creek Reservoir, connecting the east and west sides of the park.
This impressive structure effectively divides the 1,400-acre reservoir in half, with most (though not all) of the Indy Parks property located on the north side of the causeway.
More than just a road, the causeway is a popular spot for both activity and relaxation. A portion of the paved Eagle Creek Trail runs across the causeway, making it a scenic route for biking, walking, and running with beautiful views of the water.
It’s also a well-known hotspot for fishing, where anglers gather to cast a line for bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish.
Whether you’re passing through or stopping to enjoy the view, the causeway is a central feature of the Eagle Creek Park experience.
If you want to visit the Park and give back, we recommend a Foundation Pass. It grants unlimited gate entry and is the easiest way to give back to the park!

Imagine you need to get across a small river. You could build a bridge, which is like a giant leap from one side to the other.
A bridge stands up on tall legs (piers) and has a deck that stretches across the open air, with water flowing freely underneath it.
Now, imagine you need to cross a wide, shallow body of water, like a marsh or part of a big lake. Instead of leaping over it, what if you built a road on top of the ground right through the water?
That’s a causeway. A causeway is essentially a raised road or path built on a foundation of earth, rock, or other materials placed directly on the bottom of the body of water.
It’s more like a land bridge than a structure that spans over the water. While a causeway might have small bridges or pipes (culverts) to let some water pass through, most of its length is solid ground.
The Eagle Creek Reservoir is an artificial lake, created for flood control after a major flood in 1957. When engineers create a reservoir, they are essentially flooding a large valley.
But what happens to the important roads that used to run through that valley? You still need to get across!
This is where a causeway becomes a critical tool. For a wide crossing like the one at Eagle Creek, building a traditional bridge that long would be incredibly expensive and complicated.
A causeway is often a more practical and cost-effective solution. It provides a stable, solid roadway across the water, connecting parts of the park that would otherwise be separated.
The causeway at 56th Street is a perfect example, as it carries a portion of the Eagle Creek Trail, connecting the main park area with the Eagle Creek Golf Course.

The best way to support the Ornithology Center is to contribute to Adopt a Raptor, which gives directly to the Ornithology Center (OC) Fund. This fund, exclusive to the Ornithology Center and managed by the Eagle Creek Park Foundation, supports the care of raptor ambassadors, staff training, and much more. Consider supporting the OC Fund today!
Owl Fest is Eagle Creek Park Foundation’s largest fundraiser! All funds raised will go directly to support the Raptor Ambassadors at the Eagle Creek Park Ornithology Center.
Besides fundraising, there is fun for the whole family. There are guided hikes called “Owl Prowls”, live animal programs, haunted hayrides, shirts, buttons, and more for sale!

Rick’s Boatyard Cafe at Eagle Creek
Eagle Creek Park and Rick’s go together like summer and corn on the cob. If you’re planning to visit the Park, consider a Foundation Pass. It grants unlimited gate entry for the Park and is the easiest way to give back!
Rick’s Cafe Boatyard is located on the waterfront of Eagle Creek reservoir. Though it’s on the same body of water as Eagle Creek Park, it is located at the south end of the reservoir and is not directly associated with Eagle Creek Park. It features fresh seafood, prime steaks, and craft cocktails.
Rick’s is an iconic place to eat after a long day of boating, fishing, biking, hiking, or exploring at Eagle Creek Park. The outdoor seating area offers spectacular views of the reservoir and dense Hoosier forest in the surrounding area.
Because Rick’s is a popular spot, you may want to call ahead or reserve a table. Groups may also host private events at Rick’s.

Member Event with Moth Expert Jeanette Jaskula
For the second summer in a row, Eagle Creek Park Foundation has been lucky to host Indiana moth expert Jeanette Jaskula for a presentation and night of moth hunting. In her presentation “Welcome to the Dark Side,” Jeanette took a captivated crowd through everything from identification, taxonomy, moths as pollinators, and moths in pop culture. After an exciting round of Q&A with Jeanette, our members were invited to watch for moths at the baited trees and near the light setups. By the end of the evening we saw a couple dozen moth species represented, including the Dead-Wood Borer Moth and the beautiful Glossy Black Idia Moth.
Jeanette Jaskula is an Indiana-based moth expert and President of Friends of the Sands, the non-profit friends group for the Kankakee Sands region in Northwest Indiana.

Approximately 40 Eagle Creek Park Foundation Members, friends, and staff learned about moths. Then they attracted moths with two different kinds of lights and a secret recipe from our guest expert, Jeanette. What an amazing hands-on opportunity to learn about our night-time friends – the moths!
Members went deep on moths with our favorite local expert, Jeanette Jaskula. We learned about the fancy colors and important role moths play in our delicate ecosystems. Check out out or gallery of images from the night.

Eagle Creek Airpark
Flying in for days in Eagle Creek Park? A Foundation Pass grants unlimited gate entry to the Park and is the easiest way to give back!
Located near the park, the Eagle Creek Airpark (EYE) is a public-use airport owned and operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority, serving as a reliever airport for Indianapolis International Airport.
Please note that the Airpark is not affiliated with or part of Eagle Creek Park; it is a separate entity with its own operations and management.
The Airpark’s proximity to the park impacts certain activities within park boundaries. Due to FAA regulations concerning flight paths, the use of drones (UAS) within Eagle Creek Park is restricted.
All drone operators, both hobbyist and commercial, must receive prior approval before flying in the park.
For more information on drone usage and other photography guidelines, please see our Photography page >.

Marty Risch spent most of his career and an environmental scientist working for the state of Indiana and Federal Government. He was a Eagle Creek Park Ranger in the 1970’s. Today he’s a member of the Eagle Creek Advisory Committee and is a regular, enthusiastic volunteer for the Trail Crew. He developed Eagle Creek Parks fantastic Champion Trees program, which was the impetus behind this member event and hike.
Check out Marty’s Big Tree Registry >
The Champion Trees project began when Marty discovered a 300-year-old tree had been accidentally felled on the golf course. This loss spurred his mission to identify, study, and raise public awareness about Eagle Creek Park’s rare, massive trees. Since much of the park was once farmland and clear-cut, only a few of these remarkable trees remain.
During the event, members gained a deeper appreciation for the rarity and significance of these ancient giants. Marty’s work protects these vital trees, ensuring their legacy and the park’s natural heritage are preserved.
Adam sits down with Marty to learn about the Champion Trees program. You, too can experience the hike!
Members explored Eagle Creek Park’s majestic champion trees with Marty, a seasoned environmental expert. The hike revealed the hidden stories of these ancient giants and showcased how members can play a part in preserving the park’s natural legacy. Check out our gallery of memorable moments from this inspiring day.

Member Event with Author Jeff Darren Muse
Jeff Darren Muse, author of the nationwide memoir Dear Park Ranger, shared his heartfelt journey with members of the Eagle Creek Park Foundation during a special event. Known for his uncommon storytelling, Jeff’s work celebrates a deep reconnection with his Indiana roots. Accompanied by his wife, Paula—the “Park Ranger” featured in the book—Jeff captivated the audience by reading select essays from his memoir.
Throughout the afternoon, Jeff engaged in meaningful conversations with the audience, exploring themes such as the importance of nature, community, and his personal battle with cancer. His insightful reflections encouraged attendees to share their own thoughts on what they cherish most about nature, creating a space for dialogue and mutual appreciation.
Following Jeff’s talk, Assistant Park Manager Donna Riner, a certified forest therapy practitioner, led a session of forest bathing around the Ornithology Center. This meditative experience, akin to an active mindfulness session with guided prompts, allowed members to connect deeply with the natural surroundings. The combination of Jeff’s inspiring storytelling and Donna’s peaceful nature walk left a lasting impression on all who attended.
Jeff Darren Muse is a fatherless, childless Hoosier who wouldn’t and couldn’t stay put. Part Generation X travelogue, part love letter, part reflection on White male identity, Dear Park Ranger searches for purpose, companionship, a lost father, and home.
20 Eagle Creek Park Foundation Members, friends, and staff engaged with Jeff and other members about his new book, Dear Park Ranger, and the themes therein. Jeff and his wife Paula (the park ranger from the book) just moved back to Indiana and are looking for a community. Our members greeted them – Jeff and Paula know they are always welcome at Eagle Creek Park!

Members went deep with Jeff, his wife Paula, and each other as we discussed nature, our place in it, and greater purpose. Members found community and provided community to our re-Hoosiering guest.
This event was member-only. Members receive invites to roughly monthly member events.
