Foundation History
The Eagle Creek Park Foundation, Inc. provides resources over and above those included in municipal support to enhance Eagle Creek Park. Eagle Creek Park Foundation, Inc. was formed in 1978, to protect, promote, enhance and support Eagle Creek Park. Throughout the United States there is a growing need to engage both adults and young people in opportunities to explore and appreciate their natural environment. Indianapolis has recognized this need and has developed a plan of action to ensure that future generations can enjoy the outdoor world. Eagle Creek Park, the 6th largest municipal park in the Nation, encompasses two State Nature Preserves. It includes more than 3,900 acres of wooded terrain and open meadows and over 1,300 acres of water. It is the only park in the municipal system mandated to be self-sufficient. In the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Meeting and Event Planning Guide, it ranked 7th in the “Largest Indianapolis Area Tourist Attraction” list with more than 560,000 visitors in 2001. |
Eagle Creek is one of three major parks designated as a Natural Resource Park in the city park system, and it is dedicated to providing environmental education in an undeveloped natural setting. The Eagle Creek Park Foundation, Inc. was established as a citizens’ volunteer organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the Park and developing its almost unlimited potential for public service. It received its 501(c)3 determination in 1980. From a beginning membership of nine, the Foundation has grown to a membership of over 2,000. We believe experiencing the natural world improves quality of life. To that end the Eagle Creek Park Foundation, Inc. provides resources over and above those included in municipal funding to enhance Eagle Creek Park. The Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff are committed to ensuring the continuation and enhancement of the Park’s ecology. |
