If you start with 300 to 400 kids, add 75 to 100 adult volunteers, throw in 3000 worms and allow four hours of time you can expect nothing less than a fun day. The Eagle Creek Park Foundation Kids Fishing Derby, co-sponsored by Wal-Mart stores, has been a terrific success. We have, on occasion, had a larger turnout for this event than any other Wal-Mart event in the United States.
During our inaugural event in 2002 we had 168 kids participating. For 2006 there were 278 kids involved. 75 Kids joined us in 2004, before the heavens opened up, the thunder clanged and lightning spilled out on the ground. The 2005 program involved 210 excited youngsters. In 2006 we had over 300 participants on a cool, rainy day! Last year we finally had a perfect day and over 250 participants. These numbers do not include the parents and the volunteers that contributed to the success of the events, and do not reflect the many hours of planning and preparation for the event.
The Eagle Creek Park Foundation and Wal-Mart stores have sponsored this event annually in June, on the weekend the Indiana State Department of Natural Resources designates as a free-fishing day. It occurs at Eagle Creek Park from 8:00 AM until Noon. Pre-registration is necessary at either the Eagle Creek Park Office on west 56th Street or the sporting goods departments at the participating Indianapolis Wal-Mart stores and other area businesses.. Registration is limited each year and is open to children ages 4 to 14. They are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment, although a limited number of rods and reels will be available for them to borrow.
In addition to the fun of fishing there are prizes, contests, food, drinks, demonstrations, and celebrities. Joining us for a fun day at the Kids Fishing Derby at Eagle Creek Park is an enjoyable experience.
The participation of volunteers is invaluable in putting this event together and assisting in making it a successful Fishing Derby. Programming such as this cannot be accomplished without the cooperation of a group of dedicated individuals who are willing to give of their time for such a cause. This effort is appreciated more than they can realize. On behalf of the Eagle Creek Park Foundation I wish to thank those of you, both volunteers and Wal-Mart employees, who have and will involve themselves in the event.
